There is so much to see in Barcelona, and the best way to see it is on foot! I spent half of the day walking with my family and the other half with a professional photographer who who worked with me on composition. You will surely see the difference between the photographs from the former and the latter walks! The thing about photographing this city is that there is beauty everywhere – the buildings, the squares, the people, the trees, the food, the sidewalk tiles. Where to stop?
One early stop included churros and chocolate. A churro is a fried-dough pastry speckled with sugar. I had churros for breakfast one morning in Valencia but found them a bit heavy for first thing in the morning. The dipping chocolate is much like hot chocolate. The dipper becomes a drinker when the solids are done.

Another stop included Plaça Reail, the oldest square in Barcelona. This stop was a walk down nostalgia lane for Gillian and Derek who stayed in a hostel here fifteen years ago. It wasn’t clear whether the hostel still exists, but a sidewalk cafe served a lovely sangria!

Plaça Reial is just off Las Ramblas. Las Ramblas is a large boulevard that runs for over a kilometre from the harbour through the old section of the city. It is lined with vendors’ tents, is venue to innumerable street actors and artists and unfortunately pickpockets though happily we were not victims this day. Las Ramblas was packed with tourists and locals alike which made for great people-watching when not bumping into unnoticed obstacles.

We passed this wonderfully decorative building along the way. If you look closely you can see that even the underside of the cupola has been lovingly decorated.

Stefano Politi Markovina, my photographer guide, took me through more old sections of Barcelona and to the jam-packed La Boqueria – Barcelona’s central market. He provided some history of the various locations we shot and was most helpful in showing me different perspectives for making photos. If you are thinking of a photo tour in Barcelona, Stefano’s tour is well worth while. I will leave you with a selection of my favourite photos from my walk through old Barcelona with Stefano.
