On the Move

Berlin – a market and an overview

When the lightening stopped last evening and the rain let up a bit, I peered out over my balcony. This photo makes me think of an Alan Furst novel. If you’ve never read his World War II spy novels, give  him a try.

Saturday is market day in my neighbourhood. The market stalls fill the local church grounds (see photo yesterday of the church) and sell flowers, vegetables, meat, fish, socks, toys, some hardware and food-truck type food and juice to mobs of people.

I hopped on a hop on/hop off bus for an overview of things to see in Berlin. There is no shortage and I can see that my next few days will be packed with interesting experiences. Here are some of the sights that caught my eye on the bus.

(Has anyone else used Google search for images? It has been a tremendous aid for my overfull brain following a day of touring!)

I jumped at the opportunity to have currywurst. It didn’t taste much like curry but it did taste like a delicious wurst.

Just currywurst. Hold the blanket of ketchup please.

The photo below is of a storefront I passed in my wanders. I looked up the meaning of “stoffe” – it means fabrics. I preferred my own translation of “stuff.”  🙂

Two election signs I want to share with you. These are from the AFD (Alternative for Deutchland) party. I have used online translation for the messages on the posters: “Burkas? We’re on Bikinis” in one and “Burkas? I look more at Burgundy” – not clear what the message is but I am reminded of Rhino Party messages from home.

Berlin looks very prosperous. Construction is evident everywhere, people are well dressed, I have not seen signs of the homelessness, cafés and restaurants are bustling. But every now and then something looks a little down at the heels.

I will leave you with photos of three busking acts I passed today. Buskers are fairly rare, at least in the Berlin I have seen so far. I will keep my eye open for more. See you tomorrow!

The markets in Europe are so interesting and the photos of the food make my mouth water! I hope it is less muggy there now after the thunder and lightening storm.

Less muggy, yes. The weather is cool and sunny. Perfect for touring.

I think the bicolour carrots are really carrots bundled with small parsnips. They were labelled Suppengruen, which means veggies for making soup. Love the pics, especially the atmospheric first one.

AFD party right wing and anti-immigration. Message: burkas not wanted. We like bikinis and burgundy.
