Shirley and I broke the slow pace of life in the Hamptons yesterday with a visit to the Parrish Art Museum in nearby Water Mill. The museum’s exterior is unprepossessing – it looks like there should be a herd of cattle being milked inside until one looks more closely and sees Clifford Ross’s “Light Waves,” an LED wall of moving lights.
The interior of the museum is bright and airy, a long hall with rooms off both sides.
The main exhibit was photorealist paintings. Some of these works are so realistic that I had to peer very closely to convince myself that I was not looking at a photograph. Here’s a stock photo of a painting of a diner we saw at the museum.

Here’s another photo of a painting by Roberto Bernardi. We saw a similar version in the museum. I can’t imagine doing such intricate and careful work. I think if I were a painter, I would be an impressionist.

I am surprised at the geographic size of Long Island. We can drive for an hour and not reach one or the other end. But I didn’t realize it was so broad!

As Winnie the Pooh has said, today was a rather blustery day. Gray, windy, rainy – not a day for the pool or the beach. We piled the children into the car and headed for Sag Harbour. On the way we took two ferries – in one end of Shelter Island and out the other. We didn’t stop for photos at Shelter Island but I can assure you it is quintessential Long Island wealthy. Except perhaps for the Bait Shack that announced it was home to a “muther shucker.”

On the way we stopped for gas at a station that could have passed for one of the photorealist paintings we saw yesterday at the Parrish.

Sag Harbor is a typical Hamptons village, lots of small restaurants and clothing stores. And lots and lots of flags. Canadians love Canada but we are not really flag wavers. I found it interesting to see flags on streetlights, in front of buildings, in planters.
Fortunately there’s an ice cream shop in Sag Harbor. Nora and Henry enjoyed sharing some treats. Or maybe not so much. 🙂
I will leave you wish some miscellaneous photos from the past few days.
