On the Move

Kiwi, the bird

New Zealand, home of kiwis (birds and people), mountains, seascapes, and many, many sheep, where the Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed and the All Blacks reign supreme, I’m on my way!

Trip route, though not the extensions. Click on the map for a larger view.

I’m travelling with Overseas Adventure Travel again after enjoying their tours last year to Morocco and Iceland. My sister Shirley is travelling with me which is a wonderful added bonus! We will be spending 15 days with the OAT tour and then striking out on our own for a further five.

I hope you’ll travel along with me on this new adventure. Have you been to New Zealand, have any recommendations for the free time Shirley and I will have? As always, if you are an email subscriber, you can unsubscribe at the bottom of each post though I hope you won’t. 🙂

Kite koe hohoro!

I can’t say I regret leaving the snow behind. It had better be gone by the time I get back!!

Have an amazing time. New Zealand is definitely on my “want to visit” list. Perhaps you will be home again when we visit Vancouver in March (decided to avoid the February snow this year).

The drive from Queenstown to Glenorchy is breathtaking. We booked the Dart River Adventures Funyaks Tour which includes a Jet Boat ride up the river and then a leisurely paddle back down. Milford Sound is interesting if you can kayak there, although the scenery is not that much different than BC. We stayed in Te Anau and did some great hikes. Arrowtown (south of Queenstown) is an historic town with good restaurants and interesting shops. It’s worth a visit. There’s the remnants of a Chinese community by the river and there are some good hikes close to town. On the North Island we really liked Napier. Interesting history about a major earthquake and then the rebuilding of the town in Art Deco style. I also liked Waiheke Island close to Auckland. I rented an electric assist bike there and toured around the island. Interesting towns, beaches and wineries. Of course there are also great wineries in the Otago region close to Queenstown. Enjoy!

    Bon Voyage, Nancy!
What the heck does “Kite koe hohoro!” mean??? It sounds like something the All Blacks would say to intimidate their opponents in their pre-game dance chant! Or does it mean: Fly High (Kite) and Laugh (Hoho)!!!
Thanks for taking me with you!

I envy you! I spent 3 weeks in Australia and was in heaven the whole time. I really wanted to go to New Zealand also but couldn’t get the time off. I will live vicariously through your journey!

Debby and I count Queenstown as one of the most beautiful places in the world. Be sure to take a ride on the steamship over to the sheep exhitition farm. You will fall asleep long before you count all of the sheep. Happy Valentine’s Day and safe travels.

Wellington has a lovely botanical garden, and if you get a chance to take a tour of parliament, it is VERY interesting. Mike and I LOVED New Zealand. We met Debby and Larry on that trip, which made it even more special.

We arrived in Wellington this morning at 8 pm. Waiting for things to open up and then get going. Kudos to Air New Zealand! The flight from Vancouver was one of the nicest I’ve taken. Even managed 6 or 7 hours of sleep!! 😴
