At the end of my last post, I left you looking at the United Nations from a distance. As I couldn’t get any closer, there was nothing to do but head home.
My walk back to the upper west side took me along Fifth Avenue with its upscale stores.
The first of those stores was Saks Fifth Avenue. The front of the store was bedecked with US look-alike flags, perhaps an apology for being owned by the Hudson Bay Company? Luxury stores dotted the way until I reached Central Park and the large Apple store. Because of it’s crazy line up, it deserves a photo all its own!

From Fifth Avenue I crossed to my temporary home on a new route through Central Park. Along the way there were lots of opportunities for people-watching, one of my favourite things to do.
Day 3 NYC
A change of pace was called for after two very busy days. The weather was lovely, not too hot and not at all humid. I headed out to Riverside Park for a walk along the Hudson River.
It was somewhat disconcerting to exit my apartment and see a person standing with a bag over her head, tied to the scaffolding of the building next door. When I registered my concern – “Oh!” – a young man and woman with cameras explained they were making a film and this was part of the trailer. Whew!
Riverside Park is on the New York side of the Hudson River with New Jersey on the other. This is where US Airways flight 1549 landed in 2009, an event that inspired the movie Sully with Tom Hanks.
To reach the waterfront path, you have to walk through a tunnel under the Henry Hudson Parkway. This tunnel provided me with a preview of the delights that awaited me.

On this beautiful day, the waterfront path was busy with a running race adding to the general congestion.
The 59th New York Film Festival is on so I purchased a ticket to Joanna Hogg’s The Souvenir Part 1 at the Elinor Bunin Munroe Center, a block and a half from my apartment. Part 1 played out slowly and deliberately, and was beautifully acted. Mother-daughter duo Tilda Swinton and Honor Swinton Byrne star in this show. Honor must look like her father.

Following the film, I passed this sidewalk used bookshop. I didn’t stop to browse – too much searching required for me. 🙂

Tomorrow I plan to explore the lower east side – Llittle Italy and Chinatown. See you then!
