A Rainy Day Brooklyn
Card 41 The Brooklyn Park Greeway

Day 6 NYC

My Weather Network app lied to me.

It was supposed to be sunny with cloudy periods so I headed out to walk the Brooklyn Bridge Park Greenway and then back across the Bridge to Manhattan. In keeping with my flight experience, sometimes the best laid plans go awry.

257 Hicks Street

I caught an express subway to the Clark Street station which must be very deep underground. There were neither steps nor escaltor to be found. Elevator it was – a first for this trip.

On my way to the Greenway I saw a for sale sign on a nice looking townhouse – not luxury looking, but nice. When I got home I looked up the listing. You too can click here and see what a cool $5.25 million will get you in Brooklyn.

The Greenway is lovely. There are various paths through, some greener than others. There are playground for kids and for adults (eg beach volleyball), some restaurants though this is mostly a park area, and great views of Manhattan. There’s a ferry that goes from Pier 6 to Wall Street – that might be a good little trip for me! – and many other places along the East River to stop and rest your feet or admire the view.

The rain came on quite suddenly but I was able to find a place to take cover for a while before becoming too soaked. After 15 or 20 minutes, it became apparent that I had not found a long term solution. I hotfooted through the rest of the Greenway to civilization and found a nearby Shake Shack with outdoor covered tables. I had heard about Shake Shack for years from Shirley – it was a favourite of her grandchildren.

Holed up during the rain between Piers 4 and 3.

After a lunch of cheeseburger and fries, it was still raining – and me without an umbrella – so I put my head down and headed for the nearest subway that would take me back home. This is a screenshot of my Google maps direction to the station. Does it not look to you like the station entrance is in the middle of a park? I searched and searched getting wetter by the minute, and after asking for directions from two people found it. It was sort of where the bicycle person is on the right edge of the park.

The white circle is where Google says the station is.

I waved goodbye to the Brooklyn Bridge, promising to return on a nicer day.

Rainy days in New York always look so cinematic, all moody romantic. But movies, they lie. I hope you didn’t catch your death of cold getting soaked like that!

We have a friend who lives in Carroll Gardens, which is a fun sort of throw back neighborhood in Brooklyn if you’re in the mood for a kind of Moonstruck vibe.

I’m having fun tagging along with you.

Thanks Carroll! I’ll be over in Brooklyn again on Sunday so will do a search for that neighbourhood. Fortunately, it wasn’t cold out, just wet. And I didn’t have a romantic interest to obliviate the rain. 🙂

Have you walked on the High Line? We explored it in July 2019.

Hi Helen, I haven’t walked the high line yet though I did a few years ago. There’s a new extension called Hudson Yards that I will be checking out so will certainly re-walk part of the high line.

I’m reading your log on my new iPad mini. Your photos look even more wonderful on it. The graphics have been further enhanced so I can really appreciate your artistry.

Thanks Shelley! I have a new laptop as my old one gave up the ghost about a week ago. It’s a treat to have the newest technology for viewing things. Fortunately I was able to get the laptop delivered and didn’t have to stand in line in that massive crowd at the NYC Apple store.
