On the Move

So many birds …

So many birds …
Eurasian collared-dove

And such a challenge to shoot them! We saw 77 different species on Monday. Most are very small and flit about refusing to pose for photos, and they are far far away! Happiily I’ve managed to capture a few for you.

But first, a word about our lodgings in Sierra Vista. We are staying in a hotel that takes its COVID seriously. The crowd restrictions in the pool are meaningless for us as we are kept so busy there is no time for swimming! Today we left the hotel at 7:30 am, returned at 5:15 pm and left again for dinner at 6. Bird count and review was at 8:15 back at the hotel.

From a quick pre-tour walk around the hotel this morning, I captured eurasion collared doves on a light post, a mockingbird in song and a white crown sparrow.

We spent the morning and early afternoon in wide open spaces or lovely wooded areas like this,

and photographed birds like these.

A lesson I have learned from today is that my equipment is generally not up to the task of shooting Arizona birds. I am foregoing my telescopic lens and sticking to my everyday lens starting tomorrow. I know there will still be wonderful birds to share with you.

Every spring we are inundated with hundreds of grackle. They all fly in unison. It’s quite a sight. I’m hoping you are experiencing better weather than WE are. We’ve had lots of cold, rainy days.

It would be hard to complain about the weather here – bright and sunny and not too hot. I hope your weather improves soon.
