Day 3 of getting to Newfoundland. This evening I will finally be successful! After a long flight from Vancouver to Moncton to meet my sister, and a several-hour drive the next day following breakfast with my niece Whitney and her husband Taylor, Tracey and I reached North Sydney, Nova Scotia.
On the way we stopped at Beddack, a cute village on Bras d’Or Lake. Baddeck was the home of Alexander Graham Bell who, much to my suprise, invented more than the telephone. For instance prior to the wired phone he invented an optical communications system that transmitted sound on light waves. I can’t claim to undestand the ins about outs of that technology! Bell contributed to aeronautics with his invention of tetrahedral kites, and his wife Mabel opened one of the first Montessori schools in North America. If you find yourself in Beddack, be sure to visit the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site.
Other Beddack sights: a lakefront B&B, a small lighthouse also visible from the Bell museum (see header on this post), a United Church with a female rector, milkmaids/lady’s smock/cuckooflower too cute to be a weed though I fear it is.
The passenger terminal at the North Sydney dock is modern and iniviting.
I am finishing this post on the ferry to Port Aux Basques, expecting a wild ride as the wind is whistling. There are not many people are on this ferry so there is lots of room to socially distance and get comfortable and wifi throughout the trip for staying in touch. Good thing – we are here for 7 hours!
See you on the other side!
