What can I say about my photo tour? Moe Fitzgerald of Far East Photography Tours is the best! He offers several pre-set private tours but I wanted something different.

I explained that I would have no car, so wanted to go to places that would be hard to reach without a car, and Moe readily devised a plan for us. We would visit Cape Spear, Blackhead Beach, Petty Harbour and finish up at Fort Amherst shooting back towards the Outer Battery at the bottom of Signal Hill.

Moe picked me up at my hotel at 7 am and dropped me off at 2:40 pm. It was quite the day. We talked photography, Newfoundland, families – whatever came to mind. All the while Moe was finding great photo ops and giving me helpful advice on perspective. I used my 18-140 mm lens and my 10-24 mm wide angle lens and my 70-300 mm telephoto lens, and even shot some long exposures. A wonderful variety.

Here are some of my favourite photos from my tour.

First stop: Cape Spear. We spent a long time watching whales frolicking off the Cape which is the furthest east point in North America. The photo is not great, but is proof I saw a whale, or at least part of a whale! The final image in the slide show is of the light in the new lighthouse. On Moe’s suggestion I seriously underexposed the shot to try to capture the physical light and not just its glare. I think it’s makes a pretty interesting photo.

Next stop: Blackhead beach where we used my neutral density filters to take a long exposure of the rocks and water.

Blackhead Beach

On to Petty Harbour which is misnamed. It should be called Pretty Harbour. There were so many photo ops here! The final image, His and Her Boats, refers to the names of the boats: Dorothy & Francis, Andrew & Eileen. Moe said you can tell who wears the pants in each of those families. 😉

And finally to our last stop and my favourite. The Outer Battery which is a St. John’s neighbourhood is the Newfoundland of my dreams. The photo in the header is of the Outer Battery too. I took many photos, but these are my three favourites.

I am so pleased that I chose Far East Photography Tours. Please refer people to Moe. He will not disappoint!

Beautiful shots! What a great idea to underexpose the lighthouse beam. Your day with Moe sounds absolutely idyllic.

It was a great idea of Moe’s. I had been getting nothing but huge blob of white glare, trying to catch the light. The day was idyllic!
