On the Move

A thwarted walk, a museum and a gallery

I had planned to do the second urban walk recommended by the “Step It Up” blog, but when I made my way to the entrance to the West Toronto Railpath it was closed due to construction. See the header of this post.

Signs pointing to a detour where not helpful so I pivoted to Plan B – the Museum of Contemporary Art.

The MOCA is the polar opposite of the Art Gallery of Ontario. Its walls and ceiling are concrete, the spaces large and open. I wrote yesterday that I don’t usually take photos of other people’s art, but not so today. Kapawani Kiwamga, a Canadian-French artist, is the only exhibitor at the moment. I confess that I didn’t understand many of the art works, but found them all interesting to contemplate. Here are a few.

This reflective globe is in a shrouded space. It is enormous, perhaps 10 feet high, and reflects the facing corner that was painted black. I found it somewhat unnerving.

The second part of Plan B was a visit to the Daniel Farrier Gallery of photography. If you visit the website, you’ll find a good selection of June Clark’s images. They were too small to photograph for you.

Getting around Toronto on public transit is a treat. There is an extensive system of subways, trams and buses, and Google Maps is good at guiding me to the right place at the right time. The senior rate is $2.25 – a pretty good deal! On my way to the bus home from the Daniel Farrier Gallery, I passed several colourful murals, an architecturally interesting apartment complex and a lemonade stand waiting for warmer weather. Clicking on the images below will reveal larger versions.

An exuberant collection of high school students made for enjoyable people watching while waiting for my bus.

That’s it for today! See you tomorrow.
