Today we visited Coyoacán, a neighbourhood within Mexico City, where the Spanish first settled and which is now a chic community. The name is thought to come from coyotes which likely roamed the site. The street signs sport little cut out coyotes on them.
Coyoacán is also home to the Frida Kahlo Museum which was full up and with lines around the block, and the Leon Trotsky Museum which, surprisingly, had no lines! Guess where we decided to visit!
Taking the children to the Leon Trotsky Museum opened up many avenues for discussion – Trotsky, Stalin, communism, assassination, deadly ice axes – all the things children should learn about. The Museum is also the house where Trotsky lived, worked and died. Slide show below.
Derek and the boys posed in the Coyoacán sign in the town square.

A standout in the Coycoacán Square is the 16th century Catholic church, built by the first arriving Spaniards. There was a small service going on near the altar but I could take a few photos from the back.

Mexico City is Christmas-crazy! Decorations are up all over the place and sold in the market. Men were putting up Christmas decorations in the town square. Even Starbucks is in on the early start. It feels early to me, but I am well known to be a grinch! See below. Click on the arrows to scroll through all the images.
We wandered through the market, stopping to eat tacos and chicharróns at El Charro. Chicharróns, for those of you who don’t know, is fried pork rind. This is very much a meat-eating city! More scrolling to see all the images.
On the way to dinner, we passed a series of photographs posted on a fence. I took a closer look and found the series to be a photographic exhibition of the National Association of Interpreters. These fascinating images of women made up as …? was fun to video. You can hear the traffic behind me.

It being American Thanksgiving, we dined at Marmota Restaurant on extremely delicious smashburgers, grilled cheese with tomato soup, french fries, tiny grilled corn and burrata with tomatoes!
Gran día en Ciudad de México! Nos vemos mañana.
