Florence, onto Lucca

Thank you for all your lovely comments about my last two posts. I love knowing that someone is actually reading them! Gillian arrived in Florence on Sunday night and we found time to do a short wander around the city before catching our train to Lucca. We started at The Bargello housed in a great big, square block former palace. Its collection is medieval art of all kinds.

I was interested most in Andrea del Verrocchio’s David, sculpted before Michelangelo’s time. Michelangelo’s critique of all the previous Davids was that they looked like young boys and how could a young boy bring down Goliath? I am excited to see his 17 foot tall manly version in the Accademia Gallery later in my stay.

Gillian and I wandered over to the Basilica of Santa Croce. Galileo’s and Michelangelo’s and Danti’s tombs are all there. I had to giggle at the poor exhausted woman on Danti’s tomb who looks like all the poetry plum did her in! Click on each image to see a larger version.

Our train to Lucca would leave at 1:05 pm so we needed some sustenance for the journey. Amazingly we walked right by a sandwich shop that is famous on Instagram for great food – Schiaccia Teria – and we bought one to share. Not to worry, one to share could have satisfied three or four people. And yummy it was!

We met our group – there are 14 of us plus a group leader – went for a short walk and enjoyed a champagne-spiked orientation talk. Dinner was at a nearby restaurant. It featured grilled veggies for an appetizer, and tordelli Lucchese pasta with meat sauce as a main. Chocolate mousse for dessert. And lots of wine! As you can see, Gillian and I enjoyed it!

Ci vediamo domani!

Typical of me, I comment about the sandwich as it looked a huge as described. The art work pieces are incredible and the same for the architecture. I find the narrative helpful in understanding what is going on. Appreciate your efforts. Eric Carre

Loving your trip commentary and hope the rest is fabulous. I did a similar N Italy trip in May and so much of what you write is bringing back my memories of 50 years ago, and trips in between, plus May 2025. You always have a charming way of expressing and unique insights! Enjoy traveling with daughter! The best!!!! Lynnea Venieris
