On the Move

Gaspé Gannets

Gaspé Gannets
Montreal, then east to Percé (Click for a larger version)

I have been a fan of photographer Christopher Dodds for some time. He makes amazing images of birds and animals and – hurrah! – he conducts workshops! With much excitement I am heading to Percé on the Gaspé Peninsula for a three-day gannet shooting workshop which promises to be pretty instructive.

I photographed gannets when I was in Newfoundland three years ago, but those photos look pretty pedestrian compared to Chris’s. (See below!) In Newfoundland, I had to lie on my stomach and wiggle part way over a cliff to shoot the birds – a move that is definitely not my forte. This time we will be shooting from a Zodiac and on Bonaventure Island where I believe we can stand or sit while shooting. Why else would we be told to bring tripods with gimbal heads? I very much hope learn from Chris Dodds how to increase the artistic content of my bird photos.

But first a few days of urban fun in Montreal, a city I haven’t visited for 20 years. I hope you will travel along and share your throughts with me.

À bientôt de Montréal!

Wonderful photos. I was wowed by the photo on the right–and this is what I think of your photography skills–I immediately thought YOU had taken both shots. I’ll be watching for your updates.

I’m taking a Grand Circle trip to Nova Scotia in August, with a pre trip to Montreal and Quebec, so any restaurant recommendations or helpful hints would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks Shelley! I really don’t expect my photos to reach Chris Dodds’ level of artistry but I will try. I will definitely send restaurant recommendations – I am going to quite a few highly recommended ones.

I hope you have good weather for this trip! It has been cold and rainy up until the last couple of days. I am really looking forward to seeing your photos and hearing about your adventures. Please don’t forget to video chat! Love Tracey

Thanks Tracey. The forecast is not brilliant for Montreal but I don’t think it’s a city you visit for the weather! And I am a Vancouverite – well used to cool and rainy! Yes – let’s schedule a videochat.

I had the privilege of taking a boat tour in Shetland and got to see Gannets “up close and personal”. The tour boat operators threw fish for them and watching them dive was spectacular. As I follow the Shetland webcams and site I have seen action pictures of them in action. Just a point that was made last year is that the bird flu devastated the bird population in Shetland. However there are some gannets that survived the flu and their eyes are black rather than the standard blue. They are a magnificent bird and so graceful in flight. Have a marvellous time!
