Following an overnight flight from Newark to Frankfurt, we boarded plane to Valletta, the capital of Malta. It’s the city circled on the right side of the main island.

We were met by our driver and a guide at the airport and taken to our hotel, Palais Le Brun, where we went over our detailed itinerary once again. The hotel is quite lovely and located in the middle of busy bustling Valletta – a great location for heading out for discovery though at that moment, all I wanted was a shower.

Refreshed, I headed up to the rooftop pool and bar for a glass of Maltese wine. The guest in the pool told me the water was freezing, that she had turned into a goldfish, so swimming at this hotel may have just fallen off my bucket list.

Shirley and I began our first discovery, looking for our chosen dinner restaurant – 59 Republic, a charming place on St. George’s Square. Our meals were exquisite. We started with shared orders of lobster spring rolls with chili sauce and seabass corn tacos. We followed these with the risotto for Shirley and the ravioli for me. Complete, of course with Aperol Spritzes for Shirley and white wine pour moi.,

This post is all about food because we simply haven’t had time to discover anything other than the route to the restaurant. 59 Repiblic was thoroughly charming with interesting placemats. The caption on Shirley’s placemat was “too fabulous” while mine was “eat me” – an interesting choice since it was made of paper. We strolled back to the hotel along, narrow lighted streets. It is lovely to be here. Tomorrow – real discovery!
