I began the first of my four days in Salzburg with a photowalk to get the lay of the land and an idea of what I might want to revisit. I booked Edwin through GetYourGuide. He typically takes people to various places for pictures of themselves – engagements, weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, graduations, etc. He said my request to take the pictures myself was unusual but he was happy to go along because he could take his own photos at the same time. We spent an enjoyable two hours walking around Salzburg.
Salzburg has three hills; we climbed the smallest (phew! 🙂 ) On the largest one is the Fortress Hohensalzburg which is visible from all over the city.

Saltzberg has never been bombed so its fabulous churches and historic buildings and copious statuary are well preserved. We only entered one church, the Kollegienkirche Catholic Church which has a very minimalist interior. It has no chairs. Everyone stands for services, and it is often used for concerts, art exhibits, and even raves. Very liberal for a conservative city!
I later wandered about my neighborhood. There are frequent arcades off main streets leading to other busy streets. The window displays are beautiful in the shopping area so wandering was a treat.
Salzburg markets itself with a heavy emphasis on Mozart who was born here. The city also plays on its location for the filming of The Sound of Music. Edwin said most folks don’t understand the allure of that movie. They didn’t watch it when it came out because they didn’t want to revisit “the dark times.” Some folks wish that the city could find other ways to advertise itself. Personally, I would go with the Lindt chocolate store. 😉 (This video is a little uneven as the store was crowded and I was walking sideways. Please forgive.)
On our walk Edwin pointed out a very kitschy Austrian restaurant so of course I had to go there for dinner. My table was on the “second floor,” which meant climbing flight after flight of very steep stairs. I would’ve called it the fourth floor!
Gute Nacht bis morgen!
