On the Move

Paying homage

This morning I tried an app called SmartWalk. The first stop on the walk was the Hohensalzburg Fortress. I decided to start there even though I would be returning this evening for a dinner and live concert. On the way, I passed a square with all the horse drawn carts arranged in a semicircle around a statue. It almost looked like they were paying homage before starting their day.

Getting to the Fortress on the highest hill in Salzburg is not a problem as there is a funicular that takes you up the mountain. Once in the fortress, however, there are many many stairs that need climbing to visit the various displays.

The second stop on my walk was the Nonnberg Abbey, a Benedictine convent. The description says it lies a little above the city. “Little” is such a subjective word. There were 134 stairs to climb to get to the Abbey. But the view, of course, was wonderful. I didn’t make it to the actual Abbey as it was closed off for some reason.

The third stop was the St. Cajaten Church which I was unable to find using the map app on my phone. Just a sidenote – using Google maps on my phone for walking directions is confusing, but using the map that came with my iPhone is quite good. That said, I couldn’t find the Church and I was hungry so I stopped for lunch at the Trattoria Domini where I had pumpkin soup to die for and a delicious bruschetta.

All those stairs made me weary and sweaty, so I returned to my hotel for a short rest and a shower before heading out for my evening’s entertainment. Dinner and a Mozart concert in the Fortress is a popular event with tourists and occasionally with locals too. The dinner was a little pedestrian, but the concert was magnificent. Make sure your volume is turned up when you watch the video below.

Gute Nacht. Noch ein Tag und schönes Saltzburg.

Those stairs! I wonder if your legs will be sore tomorrow!

Ha ha, I’m sure my legs will be stiff. My knees aren’t terribly happy either sometimes. But I have told them this is a trip and they must behave. 😉

Lovely music! Can’t say I’ve ever had complimentary bubbles at intermission before!
