On the Move

An Arctic Adventure

Eleven years ago, I visited Antarica with my sister Shirley. We fell in love with its wide expanses, its mountains rising right out of the ocean, its pristine landscape and, of course, its penguins. If you like, you can read my Antarica blog here.

Route Map – starting in Greenland

I decided at the time that I would have to visit “the other end” of the planet and now, finally. I am doing so. I am going on a trip with Adventure Canada called Heart of the Arctic. You can see where we’re going on the map and take a closer look, if you like, at the itinerary. I’m counting on seeing majestic glaciers, polar bears, walruses, whales, lots of birds and maybe even the aurora borealis. On board the ship are Inuit cultural educators so I’m also looking forward to learning about their culture. In addition we’ll visit artist studios in Kinngait (previously Cape Dorset) and Iqaluit which will be lovely and (hopefully) not too expensive!

The Ocean Nova

The ship for the trip is the Ocean Nova. It carries 75 passengers plus crew. The ship is well equipped for handling Arctic ice if required, though something tells me that may not be necessary. As I write the forecast high for Nuuk, Greenland on the day of our visit is 13° (55°F). The forecast temperature for Kinngait is 14°C (57°F).

Nikon Coolpix S9100

This trip is not a dedicated photography trip, so after much backing and forthing, I decided not to take my “big” camera and instead rely on a “point and shoot” – a Nikon Coolpix S9100 with 18X zoom capability that I have had hanging around for years – and on my iPhone 16Pro. I was running up against weight and space limitations, and I am crossing my fingers that I am making the right decision. Over the course of my trip, be sure to let me know!

See you next from Greenland!

Have a wonderful trip, Nancy. I did that same trip some years ago with Adventure Canada and I look forward to reliving it through your blog and beautiful photographs.

I’d never heard of the Ocean Nova. I’ll be very interested to hear what you think of the line. I saw that they offer single cabins, which is now very appealing to me.

I leave to visit family next week in Fairhaven, then the following week, I’m headed to Alaska on an OAT land trip. September I go to Indonesia with OAT, and three friends are coming along for that trip.

      Hi Shelley,

Your upcoming trips sound great! I’m keeping my eye open for a Backcountry Journeys bear photog trip in Alaska. And Indonesia has been on my bucket list for a while so I’ll look forward to hearing about it from you.

I don’t think the Ocean Nova is part of a cruise line but is chartered for trips like Heart of the Arctic. Here’s some more info: https://www.swoop-antarctica.com/cruises/ships/ocean-nova?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=23385725161&utm_adgroup=&utm_content=&utm_term=&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=23385759781&gbraid=0AAAAADxjfc8qfaQlKEFvMBAQlTUQQBfsR&gclid=CjwKCAjwj7HTBhBiEiwA8s35Ot-jTTjdnUj2He5b0GCiuvXaD3LY6VZOEmQlQg9K9gyKh5lO–Nj0RoCCDwQAvD_BwE

The two single cabins are tiny. Fortunately I am not a tossed and turner so I should be fine with the narrow bed. This trip is not really a cruise, it’s more of an expedition so some of the amenities of standard cruises are missing. 😊
