On the Move

Shooting the Grand Tetons Day 3

Out at 6 am once more to shoot the Mormon barns. We joined quite a throng of photographers, jostling for position, to wait for the sun to rise and make this structure glow. These mornings are cold, but it’s only my fingers that feel it as I fiddle with the controls on my camera.

Once the sun was up, the crowd disappeared and we had lots of space to photograph the barns.

The movie Shane (1953) was shot here – I am the only member of our group who hasn’t seen it! – so a visit to the set was in order. Unlke the Mormon barns, the set has not been maintained, yet the setting remains beautiful.

No one to keep the thistles in check

A grove of aspens fully turned yellow highlighted a former aspen.

We prevailed upon Russell, our leader, to make an unplanned stop at a little bridge. If a group of people with cameras are all pointing one direction, passersby ask what we’re shooting. This morning we disappointed with “only shooting trees” but had fun ourselves.

Following dinner, we went back to the Mormon barns to do some moonlight shooting. I’ll say goodnight with these images and see you tomorrow!

Can you share exposure time and fStop on the moon shots?

Moon should be at least 3/4 full. ISO 100; aperture 5.6; time 3 or 4 minutes (we tried them both). 😊

Thanks! I was not expecting this park to be as beautiful as it is. It has been a lovely surprise!
